History

Kutai Regency is a continuation of Kutai Kartanegara ing Martadipura Sultanate. After the Republic of Indonesia was established, in 1947 Kutai Kartanegara Sultanate with the status of Swapraja Kutai Region entered into the Federation of East Kalimantan together other sultanate areas such as Bulungan, Sambaliung, Gunung Tabur and Pasir. Then on December 27, 1949 entered into the Republic of the United States of Indonesia. 


Swapraja Kutai area was changed to Kutai Special Region which is autonomous region / regency area based on Emergency Law No.3 Th.1953. Under Law No.27 of 1959, the status of the Special Region of Kutai was abolished and the area divided into 3 Regions, namely: 1. Balikpapan municipality with capital of Balikpapan 2. Samarinda municipality with the capital of Samarinda 3. Kutai Regency with Tenggarong capital In 1995 Kabupaten Kutai became one of the Pilot Areas for the Implementation of Regional Autonomy, based on Government Regulation No.8 Year 1995 on the Submission of Government Affairs Heating to Pilot Area. In 1999, Kutai Regency was divided into 4 autonomous regions based on Law No.47 Th.1999, namely: 1. Kutai Regency with Tenggarong capital 2. West Kutai Regency with the capital of Sendawar 3. East Kutai Regency with Very Sangatta 4. Bontang City with Bontang capital
